Apple has been in close contact with the automotive industry for a while now. The technology company, which was very keen on developing its own vehicle, had to postpone the project this time. Allegedly, the management level lowered its expectations for the model defined as “iCar” and postponed the release date.
Technology giant Apple has announced that it will end its efforts to produce electric cars and that many employees in this unit will focus on productive artificial intelligence projects.
Although the name “iCar” has not yet been made official by Apple, it has become an internet legend. The main goal of the technology company is to turn the model into a real technological marvel. For this reason, it has been decided that the project will not be able to be released on the specified dates.
When will Apple iCar be released?
The initial release date, announced as 2026, has thus been postponed until 2028. The statement did not come directly from Apple. However, Bloomberg emphasized that it received these claims from sources “close to the matter.”
So what are these technologies? First of all, Apple wanted to use at least level 4 autonomous technologies in its first vehicle. However, with this “lowering expectations” move, the target was lowered to “above level 2.” Apple will need time to do this.
Of course, this does not mean that level 4 autonomous driving technologies have been abandoned. Apple intends to take the model up to level 4 in the coming years.
In cars with level 3 autonomous technologies, the driver must somehow hold the steering wheel. When we reach level 4, it becomes possible for the vehicle to do all the driving on its own. In this case, the driver can still take control of the vehicle with the steering wheel.
Apple was aiming for a 2026 release before delaying it to 2028, and rumor has it that the production model would cost just under $100,000. While specifications were never revealed, their main focus would be on “autonomous driving” for highway use. But it seems we no longer have any reason to dream of an “iCar.”
